Bangladesh is one of the most flood-prone countries on earth. The monsoon brings life-giving rain — and, in many years, dangerous inundation of homes, roads, and agricultural land. Preparation before the floodwaters rise is far more effective than reacting in the chaos of an emergency.
Before the Flood: Prepare Your Home
Store at least three days' worth of drinking water in sealed containers — floods frequently contaminate water supplies. Build an emergency kit with non-perishable food, essential medications, first aid supplies, a torch with batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, and copies of important documents in waterproof bags. Keep mobile phones charged. Know in advance how to turn off your gas, water, and electricity mains.
Evacuation Planning
Identify your local cyclone shelter or flood evacuation centre and know the route to get there on foot — roads may be impassable by vehicle. Plan two routes in case one is blocked. Agree on a family meeting point and an out-of-area contact person so family members can check in if you are separated. If you have elderly relatives or young children, plan for their specific needs.
During a Flood
Do not walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Just 15 cm of moving water can knock an adult off their feet. 60 cm of water is enough to sweep away a car. Floodwater is frequently contaminated with sewage, chemicals, and debris. If ordered to evacuate, do so immediately. Avoid areas near rivers and drains where the current is strongest.
After the Flood
Do not return home until authorities confirm it is safe. Photograph damage for insurance or government relief claims before cleaning up. Boil all drinking water until the water supply has been declared safe — diarrhoeal diseases including cholera spread rapidly after floods. Watch for electrical hazards: do not switch on power until the property has been inspected.
